Tyler Perry

Say what you want about Tyler Perry but he keeps on raking in #1 film after film. With a $24 mil opening weekend his new movie “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”.

LAtimes report that Perry’s movies consistently cost under $20 million to produce and are a steady profit stream for Lions Gate Entertainment.

“I Can Do Bad” made 37% more than Perry’s “The Family that Preys” on the same weekend last year. And while “Madea Goes to Jail” and “Madea’s Family Reunion” remain his two biggest openings since he started making pictures for Lions Gate in early 2006, this weekend’s picture is his most successful that didn’t feature the popular “Madea” character front and center.

As is typical for Perry films, the audience for “I Can Do Bad All by Myself” was predominantly black women, with 75% of moviegoers female and 80% African American. Tyler Perry is the only brand that seems able to bring out this audience consistently recently.

Oprah and Tyler Perry

Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry are executive producers of “Precious,” which had a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. The film will be about a girl over coming abuse. Oprah and Perry got in on the project because the creator of the film Lee Daniels who produced the Oscar winning film “Monsters Ball” wanted to bring more attention to the project.  In an interview with The Associated Press, Winfrey said she was happy to help bring more attention to the film.

“Everyone needs someone to help them navigate,” the TV talk show host explained. “I had Bill Cosby, Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier and Maya Angelou who I look to. You can’t do that on your own. Someone has to show it to you.”

Daniels produced “Monster’s Ball,” which won Halle Berry an Oscar for best actress in 2002. She adapted “Precious” from Sapphire’s novel “Push.” It tells the story of an illiterate black girl who manages to rise above poverty, sexual and mental abuse. The film, which stars Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and others, won the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has been generating Oscar buzz.

Still, Daniels believes the cachet of Oprah and hit filmmaker Perry will help the film, which comes out on Nov. 6, build a greater audience.

This is a story that represents many young people all throughout this country definitely a tear jerker. I had had to hold back just watching the trailer.

According to sources Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes to Jail,” which grossed $89.2 million in Lions Gate’s fourth quarter. If only Tyler Perry could make two or three movies every quarter Lions Gate Entertainment might be profitable already.

Thanks to Perry, Lions Gate should post solid fourth-quarter and record year-end revenues, but it won’t be enough to lift the company into the black when it announces its results Monday.

Lions Gate already warned investors and the street back in February that its losses for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2009, would be in the neighborhood of $135 million on revenues of between $1.4 billion and $1.5 billion. Last year, the company lost $74 million on revenues of $1.36 billion. The studio has said it expects to be in the black in 2010.
