“I wanted my fragrance to be something special for my female fans,” said Blige of her new fragrance with Carol’s Daughter, My Life, named for her landmark 1994 recording of the same name. The album represented a major turning point in Blige’s life and by using it as a reference, she is attempting to encapsulate her decade long transformation and triumph.
“I was crying out for help, because I was going through so much,” she said of the period around the time of the recording, speaking exclusively to WWD on the set of the ad shoot for her scent. “And four million women said, ‘Mary, we’re going through it, too, but you’re helping us by calling on us.’ From that day on, I began speaking truths about my life, and about their lives, and everything around us. So it’s a special tribute to us as women. My fans and I are smart now. We know we’re smart now, but we didn’t know it then. We know we’re beautiful now, we didn’t know it then. We’re educated now, we didn’t know it then. We’re soft, we’re edgy we’re all those things. And I wanted this perfume to represent every female’s everyday life.” Click Here For More

Mary J. Blige along with co-founder Steve Stoute spoke with the press and people yesterday as they cut the ribbon for the official opening of their Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) which will be located in Yonkers, NY. The Center is the first of its kind and serves as a pilot program for what FFAWN hopes will be similar centers in communities in need across the country; Cehck it Out:
A partnership between Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) and FFAWN (Foundation For the Advancement of Women Now Inc.), the MJB Center is committed to providing young women and girls in Yonkers with skills, knowledge, resources and supports empowering them to pursue their personal goals and become self-sufficient, confident women.
Alan Tragear, Executive Director/CEO of WJCS, said “When Mary talks, it’s just like she sings. It’s not just from her lips, it’s from her heart.”
“I always desperately wanted to help women to become CONFIDENT [in themselves]” Mary told the crowd. She broke down in tears at one point in her speech: “When I was five years old, a lot happened to me…I also used to see women beaten almost to death growing up in my building. But it’s not just in poverty that this happens – it happens to every woman.”
