If you’re one of the thousands of small business owners and entrepreneurs who have had to close shop since the recession began you’re in good company. And, although they probably have better hair than you do, more than a few celebrities  have experienced personal business failures, too. Only they tend to have more to lose – and they have to eat way more crow.

The Real World
Lauren Conrad hoped to parlay her MTV “The Hills” fame into high fashion success, launching the Lauren Conrad Collection in March 2008. The new venture barely got off the ground; it was shut down this spring. At least she can take comfort in knowing that her famed “frenemy”, Heidi Montag, suffered the same fate. Her barely-there clothing line - Heidiwood - also tanked just seven months after its launch.

Investors Put the Squeeze on Somersized Venture
Suzanne Somers, best known as the blond, beautiful and often bubble-headed ”Chrissy” on the 1970s TV show Three’s Company, made a bundle with her uber-successful Thigh Master, but didn’t find as much support for ”Suzanne’s Kitchen” – a make-it-yourself meal preparation franchise that provided ingredients and recipes from Somers’ cookbooks. The business was open for less than three months before changes in the business plan and a disagreement with investors led to a quick closing.

Luaren Conrad

These days reality stars are becoming just as popular as bonafied actors, and in some cases richer. Trend setters such as Paris Hilton and Nicole set the pace and young up and comers like Lauren and Heidi from The Hills are taking it to another level. Former Hills star Lauren Conrad is riding high off the success of her book L.A. Candy which is a New York Times best seller. Nydailynews reported that with the success of the book it seems that Lauren has now been getting movie offers to turn her novel into an on screen pic. Check it Out:

If you need your fix of Lauren Conrad now that she’ll no longer be appearing on “The Hills,” cross your fingers: She could be coming to a big screen near you.

The former reality star has revealed that a celluloid adaptation of her roman à clef novel, “L.A. Candy,” could be in the works very soon.

“We’re hoping for a movie deal,” Conrad told us while hosting the Pool After Dark party at Harrah’s in Atlantic City over the weekend. “I’m working on [adapting the book for the movies] right now, but I don’t want to commit to anything until I see all my options. We have had a lot of exciting news in that respect, though.”

As for casting, Conrad has no clue. “I haven’t even thought about it,” she confessed. And we know what that means – Conrad could be playing … herself! Er, we mean the protagonist, Jane Roberts – a girl who moves to Hollywood, gets her own reality show and ends up working at an events company, à la Conrad herself.

The Orange County native is also penning her second book. “I actually finished the first draft – I’m doing edits right now,” she confided. “It picks up where the first left off. I signed a three-book deal, so this is all part of the same story. The second book will be more dramatic than the first. It’s a relief, because I didn’t have to worry about character introductions.”

But is LC writing her own stories? Frenemy – and former “Laguna Beach” co-star Kristin Cavallari – recently said she thought “L.A. Candy” may have been ghostwritten. “Lauren says she wrote it, but I don’t know,” Cavallari laughed. “Writing a book is not so easy.”

A stone-faced Conrad retaliated: “I wrote my book, and I don’t really feel the need to defend it. I’ve been writing forever. I have never written anything professionally before, so this was a big step for me. [Writing] was always my best subject in school, and it’s something I’ve always loved to do.”
