Drake’s, debut album “Thank Me Later,” was the most anticipated album of the year, with everyone projecting major sales. Reports are showing in his first week Drake sold 462,989 units. Considering the industry climate I think that was a damn good debut for a new artist. It will be interesting to see the numbers for week 2-3-4; that will really tell the story of how fans are appreciating the album.
Did the album live up to the hype in your opinion?

In my opinion Drake will be what Kanye West could be if he could play by the rules lol. Drake’s Branding potential is on another planet. He has the suburb kid image and all the respect of the hood and companies are starting to take notice; first up is Sprite, check it out.(This is crazy, the boy hasn’t even dropped an album yet and he’s already inking major deals, so can you imagine what’s about to happen with this kids career, wow!!!)
The release date of Drake’s highly-anticipated debut album may still be up in the air but he is still making his presence felt in other ways. The Toronto rapper has teamed up with Sprite for the first commercial of its recently launched “Spark” campaign, aimed at giving teens a platform to express their creativity through music and film. The campaign is the brand’s first-ever global marketing push as well as Drake’s first worldwide deal.
The commercial featuring Drake, titled “Unleashed,” features the MC struggling to find inspiration in the studio while recording his hit song “Forever;” the song was originally featured in NBA star LeBron James’ documentary, “More Than A Game,” and reached No. 2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Drake drinks a Sprite and morphs into an animatronics model with the Sprite traveling through his body and exploding through his heart, which is in the shape of a large speaker. The model reassembles, helping unleash Drake’s lyrical prowess with the delivery of the song’s intro line: “Last name Ever/First name greatest.”
The ad also features Drake’s real life long-time collaborators: producers 40 and Boy Wonder.
“The day we were shooting they had generic extras in this beautiful set they had created. I told them, ‘look, honestly, this is not really how I record. My recording sessions don’t look like a party — we actually come to work’,” says Drake. “To make it a genuine studio moment I asked if 40 and Boy Wonder could be a part of it — they are key elements behind my creative process. To have all three of us in the commercial was a glorious moment for me.” (Rest of post and full Sprite commercial when you click)
Around the time that Kanye directed “Best I Ever Had,” it seemed like there was strife between your camp and Cudi’s camp because Kanye was so enamored of you while Cudi’s project was being worked on.
Drake:I wasn’t aware of that. Even so, I could understand. If Wayne were to be enamored—which is a great word—of another young artist, I would be like, “Damn, I’m here too!” But at the same time, it happens in more than one situation. It happens with ‘Ye, and I have a great relationship with Jay, and Jay’s got Wale and J. Cole, who’s one of my favorite dudes rapping right now. I’ve happened to have had more success. I made the most money, I have number-one records, those guys don’t have that shit. And it’s just facts, it’s not even my feelings or that I feel I’m more talented. That’s what the game is about, making great music that earns profit. When it comes to my relationship with the new dudes, I’m just excited for them. I get to sit back in a cool position and be like, “Yo, I’m excited to see you do it now because I know what it’s like, it’s gonna be so much fun for you…”
You and Wayne share an ability to cross over to diverse groups. What do you think it is that attracts polar-opposite groups to enjoy your music? Is it the Young Money affiliation alone?
Drake:I’m not talking about a thousand rounds in a chopper or payin’ 24, 23. It’s just delivery. One of my favorite rappers in the world, Jeezy, is somebody who loves my music. For him to not only co-sign what I’m doing but also to want to make music with me is crazy. Wayne had this conversation with me like, “You’re in a position where you could be a star. Not just a rapper star. A true star.” Me being biracial, me being from Canada but having success in the States, I have all these moments in my life where I’m jumping roof to roof. Black to white. Singing and rapping. My mom’s friends listen to my music and don’t feel weird about it. They feel weird listening to Wayne.
