R&B

promo2

In this edition of ENTnext Alexis Diaz had a chance to catch up with soulful R&B/Hip-Hop artist from Detroit, MI; Ivan Keith. Ivan started his courtship with music in grade school as a musician; first trying the trumpet on for size, and later switching to saxophone. In high school Ivan taught himself some guitar basics and began to write songs and sing. He also focused his lyrical talents toward rap verses. In 2004 he hooked up with singer, producer, and songwriter Jacob Borum to create One Track Entertainment, LLC.

December 2009 marked the release of Ivan Keith’s debut album: About Love, produced by One Track and written by Ivan. While the title of the album gives away its subject matter, his use of synth laden beats with melodic lines give a fresh take on the topic at hand. There are songs such as “Healer” which seem completely influenced by the Neo-Soul movement, and others like “Vacation” that have current R&B and Hip Hop elements on top of a lush production arrangement. About Love covers every aspect of Love: the newness, the satisfaction, the breaking-up, and the making-up, and falling in love all over again.

This is definitely a talent you want to keep an eye out for in the years to come. His musical talent is very diverse which kind of put him in a lane all by himself, which isn’t a bad thing these days. Check out our Quick 6 interview with him below and some of his music. His album About Love is currently available for sale as a digital download on sites such as iTunes, amazon.com, lala.com etc.

Game

Once upon a time, gangster rapper Game had preconceived notions about eccentric rapper/producer Pharrell Williams — and vice versa. But the two have since put aside their differences; Williams is the executive producer of Game’s fourth studio album, “R.E.D..” “It was the most hood album I had until Pharrell came in and took over,” the Compton, Calif.-raised rapper said of the collaboration, which Interscope Records will release February 16.

“Don’t get me wrong — this album is still hood,” Game continued. “I would describe it as the beauty of the sky meets the gangster of the streets. It’s just got a bit more color to it.” Williams isn’t the only mixmaster contributing beats to “R.E.D.” Cool and Dre, DJ Khalil and Dr. Dre all lend their production efforts, while Beanie Sigel, Rick Ross, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke make guest appearances.

Billboard: What does the album title mean?

Game: It was a title Pharrell and I came up with. It was like where I am at in my career. My last album felt like it might’ve been my last album, but it turned out not to be. So, this album is the rededication — to myself and to what I care about, like my friends, my family, my city, my hood, my genre and rap.

Billboard: How did you link up with Williams for this album?

Game: We worked together one day, and that one day turned to 30 days, and those 30 days turned to 60, and then those 60 developed into a friendship. We both prejudged each other, but once we met, we realized although we come from different places and different situations, we were kind of the same in different aspects of life. Now, our relationship is bigger than music. We have life conversations about bettering ourselves, and we’ve become good friends. We realized that aside from being musicians, we are brothers in this thing we call hip-hop.

Billboard: Dr. Dre produced two tracks for this album so far. How does it feel to work with him again?

Game: Dre and I have always been on the same team, I’ve just been too wild for him at times. He’s older and legendary and he’s been through enough drama in his career and doesn’t have to jump into my drama. So, I understood that and why he pulled back.

Billboard: You recently got the words “Star Trak,” the name of Williams’ label, tattooed on your arm. Are you signed to him now?

Game: No. I’m Black Wall Street all day, but considering all he’s done for me — he saved my career — I’m riding for Star Trak too. I hold dear anything that helps elevate me and my life and my career and helps me take care of my family. I’ll be in debt to him forever for what he’s done for me. I appreciate him and I would never go to such extremes as to get a tattoo if it didn’t deserve it.

Billboard: 50 Cent, your former label president and arch enemy, released an album recently that sold only 160,000 copies in its opening week. What are your thoughts on that?

Game: It didn’t do the numbers he expected, but he should try harder next time. Some sell a million, others do 50. For him to do everything he’s done and start beef with other rappers like Rick Ross and draw media attention to himself in that way but only sell 10 more thousand than Ross means people aren’t buying into the bulls–t anymore.

Billboard: You’re still wrapping up this album. Are there any surprises you’ve got up your sleeve?

Game: I’m trying to get (Interscope co-founder and chairman) Jimmy Iovine to throw me in the studio with Lady Gaga. She’s a rebel, and I go against the grain every day, so, if it happens, it’ll be monumental for the state of music.

Kesha

Newcomer Ke$ha is taking off.

She has her first solo chart single “TiK ToK” to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (2-1), set to be released on billboard.biz on Thursday, (Dec. 24). She’s the first female vocalist to rise to No. 1 with her debut single since Lady Gaga stormed the list with “Just Dance” in January 2009.

“TiK ToK” is actually the second Hot 100 No. 1 to feature vocals by the 22-year old. She had a non-credited appearance on Flo Rida’s six-week chart-topper “Right Round” earlier this year. “TiK ToK’ is the first release from Ke$ha’s debut set, “Animal,” which hits retail on January 5.

“TiK Tok” also moves 2-1 on Digital Songs with 221,000 downloads (up 40,000) and is the Digital Gainer on the Hot 100. The song’s weekly total is the highest sum since Britney Spears’ “3” posted 254,000 on the chart dated Oct. 24. “3” remains in the Hot 100 top 10, falling 9-10 this week. Ke$ha’s move to the top bumps “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z & Alicia Keys from its perch (1-2) after a five-week run. Check out her video below:

chris-brown-graffiti-albumChris Brown popped off on twitter a few days back about his perceived notion of getting blacked balled by retailers because of his Rihanna affairs. Brown stated, “im tired of this shit. major stores r blackballing my cd. not stockin the shelves and lying to costumers. what the fu** do i gotta do… … yeah i said it and i aint retracting sh** im not biting my tongue about sh** else… the industry can kiss my a**.” But it seems that retailers feel the complete opposite and think they may have over stocked Chris’s album, Check it Out;

A survey and store visits find that Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Trans World, Newbury Comics are all carrying the Brown record and sources say that his album received widespread distribution and promotion by his label, Jive Records, and his distributor, Sony Music Entertainment. Jive shipped over 400,000 units of “Graffiti,” and also had it positioned in prime stores space at all key accounts, according to sources. In fact, sources suggest that Jive may have overshipped his record, as sales are slow.

“Not only am I carrying it, I am over carrying it, because it isn’t selling,” said the head of purchasing at one large chain. “I wish I could return it.” He says the album’s first week sales only reached 40% of expectations.
