LeBron James could reportedly have a new number next season, but Cleveland Cavaliers fans hope the words remain the same.
James filed paperwork to switch from No. 23 to No. 6, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on Monday. He beat a Wednesday deadline to make the request.
The All-Star said in November that he was thinking of giving up 23 out of respect for his hero Michael Jordan, but at that time he was “50-50,” according to the newspaper.
“I’ve done it,” James told the Plain Dealer. “I already sent it in. I’m going to be No. 6.”
Six is James’ jersey number on the Olympic team, but the NBA does not have to grant his request. If James switches teams, he can choose any number he wishes. The change only applies if he stays with the Cavaliers.
James will be part of the vaunted 2010 free-agent class that includes Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. While Bulls fans would like to see him try to make No. 6 as legendary as No. 23 in Chicago, New York has also maneuvered to have enough cap space to sign James.
Cleveland can sign James to a longer, more lucrative deal, however.
Jay Z and the wifey took in the Lakers Dallas game last night. B pulled out some of her wardrobe from the I’m a survivor video lol… I’m just joking! Check out more pics below.
Carmelo Anthony came up big for the Nuggets with 40 points and a game-winning jumper with 1.9 seconds left on the clock in a 118-116 OT win. Highlights Below
Mike hasn’t lost a bit of his branding mojo. Bringing in $45mil last year made Mike the #2 highest paid athlete in the world, behind Tiger Woods who took in $110mil.
Arguably the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. Today the Jordan brand is a nearly $1 billion (sales) business for Nike, sponsoring other athletes including Derek Jeter, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade and Ray Allen. Today Jordan is a minority owner and head of basketball operations for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats; majority owner Robert Johnson has recently been shopping the team, and Jordan’s reportedly on the short list of potential buyers. I think it would be really good for the NBA to have Mike as a franchise owner and maybe we can get that logo changed to the Jump Man logo in addition.
Jay Z and Lebron James held it down in Dallas this weekend hosting their 2 Kings Dinner. Diddy, Gale King, Drake, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd and more came out to support; check out pics below:
Highlights from the All Star Game, D. Wade took home the MVP but it easily could have went to Lebron… also, the game drew the biggest crowd every to attend a basketball game with 109,000 fans. It really worked out for Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones who were going to town lobbing to get the game in Dallas.
NBA Dunk Contest: Nate Robinson took home his third trophy in what was a pretty easy win considering he was the crowd favorite and competition was lacking… next year they really got to get some of the stars in the league to participate because the dunk contest is really beginning to suck!
The NBA and Hip Hop love affair continues as Amare Stoudemire reveals to The Fusion Magazine launch a new record label “Hypocalypto” and perps first artist Juice new album which will be a joint deal with rapper Game’s Black Wall Street label, check it out:
There are two sides to every coin, two sides to every story, at least two paths to every fork in the road, and two choices to every decision made. But what happens when two dreams pull equally at your heart strings? Do you give up one? Or go balls to the wall in an effort to achieve greatness, twice over?
Amar’e Stoudemire didn’t start playing basketball until he was 14, but his passion for music has been lifelong. The teen prodigy played two years of high school ball, then declared for the NBA. He was drafted 9th in the 02 Draft, was 03’s Rookie of the Year, is a 5 time NBA All Star, and Olympic Bronze Medal winner.
So what could be left? Besides the ever elusive NBA championship ring? Why not a Record Label, maybe even a Grammy, by way of his Hypocalypto Artist: Juice.
How did you make the transition from the basketball court to the hip hop side of the industry and what prompted it?
I have a huge passion for music. I wanted an opportunity to explore that side of it, so I started the record label to see if I could be successful at it. There are a lot of quality artists out there who just don’t get the opportunity to prosper, so I started it as a way to help, for one, and secondly to fill my passion for hip hop music.
How did you come across Juice and how did that develop into the business relationship that you have now?
I knew Juice before we actually signed him. The situation he was in prior to me wasn’t working out well for him so I invited him over to Hypocalypto. We sat down and came up with an idea together of what we wanted to do with him as a project. Now he’s Hypocalypto and we go from there.
Lol it must be something about the Garden that make the greats want to go hard. Lebron dropped 47pts the other night while scoring 24 straight. I know New Yorkers are praying that they snatch him up in the off season.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that LeBron Jamesand McDonald’s teamed up to film a Super Bowl ad that includes Larry Bird and Dwight Howard. James and McDonald’s have been in talks about a deal for several years and it looks like it finally happened despite the lousy environment for sports sponsorship deals. It is the first new sponsor in the James’ portfolio since he signed with State Farm Insurance at the beginning of 2008. The deal which is likely worth $3-4 million annually replaces the income for two James’ endorsement deals that expired over the past 15 months: Microsoft and Cub Cadet.
The deal cements James as the NBA’s endorsement king along with Kobe Bryant. They are the only two current NBA stars to earn more than $20 million annually from sponsors. The NBA’s last two MVPs have a long way to go though to catch Michael Jordan who still earns more than $40 million annually thanks to the Jordan Brand which is now a $1 billion brand (annual sales) for Nike.
