MLB

RyanHoward-721788For the past two years Ryan Howard has put in major work to distinguish himself from the rest in MLB; and now that work has paid off like never before. The Phillies has inked Howard to a $125 million, five-year contract extension Monday that could keep him with the Phillies until 2017.

Don’t get me wrong his journey to become the second highest paid player in MLB goes far beyond these past two years, but in realizing the possibility of being one of the highest paid Howard kick it up a notch work ethic to prove he is heads above the rest.

Ryan Howard is one of four players to hit at least 40 home runs and have 130-plus RBIs in four straight seasons. (Babe Ruth did it 7 seasons straight, Sammy Sosa 4 season, Ken Griffey Jr. 4 seasons)

The 30-year-old Howard will make $20 million each in 2012 and 2013 and $25 million annually from 2014-16. The Phillies have a $23 million club option for 2017 with a $10 million buyout.

I figured since the MLB is kicking off their perseason and all the players recently cashed a bunch of new checks for this year, I would show they type of things some of them will be spending their baseball bucks on, check it out!

derek-jeterSports Illustrated Group Editor Terry McDonell announced that Derek Jeter is the 2009 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Jeter is the first New York Yankee to receive this award. Previous winners include Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. The 2009 SI Sportsman of the Year issue hit the newsstands December 2. The issue marked the 11th cover appearance for Jeter.

Since 1954 the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year has been presented annually to the person who excelled in athletic performance and demonstrated great character. “Over all the years SI editors have used the same language to define the award,” said McDonell. “It is not for the victory alone that he (or she) is honored; rather, it is for the quality of his effort and the manner of his striving.’ And that defines Derek Jeter.”
“While having a Hall of Fame career and under a brilliant spotlight, Derek conducts himself with class and a selfless demeanor that allows not only his teammates but also his sport and his community to flourish,” McDonell continued. “It was his leadership both on and off the field that drove the Yankees to the world championship, and his Turn 2 Foundation is one of the most efficient and effective foundations of its kind. It is an honor to include Derek Jeter in the Sportsman fraternity.”

LA Doggers Owners

This story includes a $1.2 billion team eight homes two of which total $47 million and a boat load of allegations and slander. It amazes me that two can remain married for 30 years accomplish so much together and then one day throw it all away. There is something definitely wrong with people today. Check this Out:

According to sources the Los Angeles Dodgers franchise is being rocked by the spectacularly nasty divorce of the team’s owners, Frank and Jamie McCourt.

The case is less than a week old and it’s already yielded accusations of adultery and lavish alimony demands and been dubbed the “War of the Roses.”

The high stakes, very public battle became official when Jamie filed paperwork Tuesday to end the power couple’s 30-year, $1.2 billion union.

She claims her estranged husband “unceremoniously” fired her as the Dodgers’ CEO in mid-October in a greedy bid to claim her share of the team.

Frank, 56, responded by saying he booted Jamie, 55, for insubordination and an “inappropriate” affair with bodyguard Jeff Fuller.

Jamie dropped a list of eye-popping demands, including monthly support of almost half a million dollars, unlimited five-star travel, free use of Dodger legends at events and flowers in her office.

Jamie also is demanding reinstatement to her $2 million-a-year job and an even share of the team she says they bought as co-owners for $430 million in 2004.

I must say that the NBA is back teams are stacked with star players and they are having to come with their A+ game every night. I went to the Nuggets vs. Grizzlies game last night and Melo and Mayo went off… if Melo stay healthy I believe he can snatch the MVP this year, he looks that good out there.

————————————

Favre still got it and just think of how they were saying he needs to retire. Lets this be a prime example that damn what others say you have to believe in yourself.

—————————————

This series is a done deal the Yanks lead it 3-1 going into game 5. The Phillies might as well had over the crown. Its good for the sport of baseball that the Yanks win the World Series every few year; they are probably the most well known sports franchise in the world.

The Bronx Bomber Alex Rodreguez recently claim clean about his previous use of steroids while with his former team the Texas Rangers, but now it looks as if more steroid use allegations have hit the surface. In today’s news Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts, who broke the story that A-Rod flunked a steroid screening in 2003, insists that it is more than likely that A Rod also used steroids as a team and also while with the Yankees. A Rod remains steadfast that he only use while with the Rangers but I’m sure that when Selena’s book (A-Rod) is released May 12, and as this story continue to unfold the truth will hit the fan.

A Rod signed a 10 year, $275 million contract with the Yankees. which is the biggest contract in the history of baseball. (breaking his previous record of $252 million). He makes millions of dollars from endorsements and was pretty much considered a shoe in for the MLB Hall of Fame. With these new allegation and his admittance of steroid use from 2001-03 it is going to be interesting to see how his celebrity, accolades, endorsements, and chances for the Hall will be affected.

Recession or no recession, many NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball players have a penchant for losing most or all of their money. It doesn’t matter how much they make. And the ways they blow it are strikingly similar.

By the time they have been retired for two years, 78% of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress because of joblessness or divorce.

Within five years of retirement, an estimated 60% of former NBA players are broke. Former NBA forward Shawn Kemp (who has at least seven children by six women) and, more recently, Travis Henry (nine by nine) have seen their fortunes sapped by monthly child-support payments in the tens of thousands of dollars. Last month Henry, who reportedly earned almost $11 million over seven years in the NFL, tried and failed to temporarily reduce one of his nine child-support payments by arguing that he could no longer afford the $3,000 every month. Two weeks later he was jailed for falling $16,600 behind in payments for his child in Frostproof, Fla. Full Story @ SI Vault
